Finding the best new home for your website makes perfect sense when your business is growing

“A migration of a website” is a term used to describe any major change in the settings of the site, which is usually done to improve the performance, usability or avaibility. Such changes could be made in the domain name, the URLs, the hosting platform or the design.

The migration is a necessary part in every business development, no matter if your web hosting is not meeting your websites’ needs or you want to have better performance for your money. Our team is proud to be able to guarantee that you will face no difficulties during the entire process.

There are different types of migrations, but the main bullets in the planning and the problem solving are similar. Planning and Preparation

The good plan for every step of the website migration minimizes failures

First, you need to decide what you are going to change and who is going to change it. Then, you must have a plan and a possibility to track the changes - you should be able to contact the team, that is taking part in it and to know what the individual tasks and deadlines are. This is where you could find our team’s services particularly useful, as we are here to help you in every step.

While preparing the Plan A, don't forget to also have a Plan B in mind. You want to have one, in case anything goes wrong. So, making a backup with the latest changes of your website and be ready to switch quickly from the current hosting provider to the new one is a good start.

Executing the Migration

Two main transfer scenarios

CooliceHost, has automated some steps of the process, in order to waste no time during the website transfer.

Transferring the files to the new host
We recommend using the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to transfer your data, as we like to keep the process clear and short. First, you should log into your current hosting account and download all your website data to your personal computer. Then, you go to your new hosting account’s main folder and upload the files. Usually, the folder’s name is “www”, “httpdocs”, “public_html” or similar.

Please check this FTP guide, if you have troubles in how to use FTP.

Transferring the website’s databases
Usually, the database content must be exported from your current hosting account into an SQL file. Next, the data should be imported into a new database at your new hosting company.

Please read our guide, if you are interested in how to import/export databases via phpMyAdmin.

Application setup on the new host
Making the setup of your app could be a bit tricky, as it mostly depends on the characteristics of the application itself (reconfigure WordPress, reconfigure Joomla, reconfigure Drupal, reconfigure SMF, reconfigure phpBB2, reconfigure Opencart, reconfigure Prestashop, reconfigure Magento, etc.). That is why our professional team is here to assist you, in case you need any help.

Skip some steps with our import
You could always choose the second website migration scenario with our expert help:

  • Generate Full account backup at your current hosting (files, database, e-mails, and etc.)
  • Download it to your local PC
  • Upload it to your hosting account (in public_html folder) by using a FTP client for file transfer (FileZila, WinSCP, CuteFTP, Core FTP, and more)
  • Once the upload is ready, our team will import the entire archive in your new hosting account. Please consider that we can only do this if the generated full backup is done in a hosting account with DirectAdmin or cPanel.

And now we a ready for the final step!

NOTE: CooliceHost technical team will assist you with your migration ONLY if the process could be done by our software - cPanel to DirectAdmin, or DirectAdmin to DirectAdmin. In any other cases we reserve the right to refuse an assistance.

Testing and Setuping the Website in Your New Home

Before each transfer is completed we double check that everything is working properly

Now that the entire data is moved or/and imported in your new hosting account, our team makes sure to have checked if it is all functioning the way it should. Once we have changed the IP address in our host file, we always listen to that new IP (xxx.xx.xxx.xxx www.website.com). Thus, we can find errors or/and missing information, if any. The next step is checking the size of the database, the number of e-mails, and in case any discrepancy emerges we synchronize once again.

How to test our website with the hosts file before changing DNSs

The DNS changes
The next thing you must do is to alter the nameservers for your domain name to lead to your new host. In order to do this, you should go to your domain register. When you place an order and you pay for the hosting plan you have chosen, you will receive an e-mail with additional information on how to find your CooliceHost DNS records.

Setup the Third-party services
Congratulations! Now you see your website on your new hosting and now you need to do just one last thing, in case you use Third-party services like APIs, CDN (CloudFlare), SSL Certificate (Lets' Encrypt for example), Chats, Social & Marketing protforms, etc. – to setup everything necessary to see your website completely functional.
